This Privacy Policy describes how GoBrief ("we", "us", or "our") collects, uses, and shares information when you use our mobile application (the "App") and related services. By using the App, you agree to this policy.
1. Information We Collect
We may collect the following types of information:
1.1 Account Information
- Email and password: When you register with email, we collect your email address and a securely stored password hash.
- Google Sign-In: If you sign in with Google, we receive your Google account email and basic profile information as permitted by Google's API.
- Profile data: Optional display name and profile photo that you may add to your account.
- Email verification status: Whether your email address has been verified.
1.2 User Preferences
The following preferences are stored locally on your device and may be synced to our cloud servers to support your experience across devices:
- Appearance: Theme selection (light, dark, or system default).
- Playback settings: Playback speed, auto-play preference, and sleep timer duration.
- Language settings: UI language, content language, and translation preferences.
- Voice preferences: Selected text-to-speech voice for global use, per-section voices, and per-book voice overrides.
1.3 Reading Activity and Progress
The following data is tracked to sync your reading progress across devices:
- Book progress: Current position, completion status, section index, section position, and total sections for each book.
- Reading activity: Last played timestamp and reading streaks (current streak, longest streak, last reading date).
- Book status: User-set status for each book (not started, in progress, or completed).
- Saved books: Books you have bookmarked or saved.
- Playlists: Your custom playlists containing book IDs.
- Growth Plan progress: Your progress through Growth Plans (challenges), including current step, day, completion status, and quiz scores.
- Category goals: Selected reading goal section IDs.
1.4 Device and Technical Information
- Device information: Device type (Android), operating system version, and app version.
- FCM token: Firebase Cloud Messaging token for delivering push notifications to your device.
- Notification preferences: Your settings for which types of notifications you wish to receive, including quiet hours configuration.
1.5 Analytics Events
We collect the following analytics events (when analytics are enabled):
- App usage: App open/close events with session duration.
- Authentication: Sign-in, sign-up, and sign-out events (with method: email or Google).
- Book interactions: Book views, book starts, book completions, and progress updates.
- Playback events: Playback starts, pauses, resumes, and speed changes.
- Search: Search queries and search result clicks.
- Feature usage: Sleep timer settings, theme changes, language changes, and setting modifications.
- Subscription events: Paywall views, subscription starts, and subscription cancellations.
Analytics can be disabled at any time from within the App settings.
1.6 Crash and Error Reporting
We use Firebase Crashlytics to collect crash reports and non-fatal errors. This may include:
- Stack traces and error messages
- Device state information
- Your user ID (if signed in) to help correlate errors with specific users
1.7 Subscription and Payment Data
Subscription management is handled by RevenueCat. We do not store your full payment card details on our servers. RevenueCat receives anonymized or hashed identifiers to manage entitlements and subscription status.
2. How We Use Your Information
We use the information we collect to:
- Provide, maintain, and improve the App and its features (audiobooks, text-to-speech playback, progress tracking, cloud sync).
- Authenticate you and manage your account.
- Sync your reading progress, preferences, and activity across devices.
- Track and maintain reading streaks and achievement data.
- Process and manage subscriptions and premium (Bookiepia Pro) features.
- Send you push notifications (e.g., reading reminders, new book announcements, promotional offers) if you have granted permission and opted in.
- Schedule local reminders (morning/evening reading reminders, streak warnings, inactivity nudges).
- Analyze usage patterns and fix crashes to improve performance and user experience.
- Comply with applicable laws and enforce our terms of service.
3. Third-Party Services
We use trusted third-party services that may collect or process data on our behalf:
- Firebase (Google): Authentication (Firebase Auth), cloud database (Cloud Firestore), analytics (Firebase Analytics), crash reporting (Firebase Crashlytics), push notifications (Firebase Cloud Messaging), and app security (Firebase App Check). Their privacy practices apply: Google Privacy Policy.
- RevenueCat: Subscription management and entitlement checks for Bookiepia Pro. See RevenueCat Privacy Policy.
- Google Play: In-app purchases and subscription billing through Google Play Store. Subject to Google Privacy Policy and Google Play terms.
- MMKV: A high-performance key-value storage solution used to store your preferences and progress data locally on your device. See MMKV Privacy Policy.
We do not sell your personal information to third parties for advertising or marketing purposes.
4. Data Storage and Security
4.1 Local Storage
Some data is stored locally on your device using MMKV, including:
- User preferences (theme, playback settings, language, voice selections)
- Book progress and reading status
- Notification preferences
- Onboarding completion status
4.2 Cloud Storage (Firestore)
When you are signed in, the following data is synced to Firebase Cloud Firestore servers:
- User preferences (voice settings, translation preferences)
- Book progress and reading activity (for cross-device sync)
- Reading streaks and last reading dates
- Saved books, playlists, and category goals
- Plan progress and quiz scores
4.3 Security Measures
We use industry-standard measures to protect data in transit (HTTPS/TLS) and at rest. Authentication is handled by Firebase Auth, which maintains security standards. No method of transmission or storage is 100% secure; we encourage you to use a strong password, keep your device secure, and sign out when using shared devices.
5. Push Notifications
5.1 Remote Notifications (Firebase Cloud Messaging)
If you enable push notifications, we may send you notifications on topics such as:
- New book announcements
- Feature announcements
- Promotions and discounts
- App update reminders
- Seasonal and event content
You can manage your notification preferences within the App or disable push notifications in your device settings.
5.2 Local Notifications
The App may schedule local notifications on your device for:
- Morning reading reminders (at your preferred time)
- Evening reading reminders (at your preferred time)
- Streak warnings (when your streak is at risk)
- Inactivity nudges (after 3 days without activity)
- Download completion and audio-ready alerts
- Sleep timer end alerts
6. Your Rights and Choices
- Account access: You can view and update your account information and profile from within the App.
- Preferences: You can modify your preferences for theme, playback, language, voice, and notifications at any time.
- Analytics opt-out: You may disable analytics collection from within the App settings. Note that this does not affect crash reporting.
- Push notifications: You can disable push notifications in your device settings or manage notification topics within the App.
- Local notifications: You can configure or disable local notification reminders (morning/evening reminders, streak warnings) within the App.
- Account deletion: You may request deletion of your account and all associated data by contacting us at the email below. We will process such requests in accordance with applicable law.
- Data portability: You may request a copy of your data in a portable format by contacting us.
- Location-based rights: Depending on your location, you may have additional rights under laws such as GDPR (European users), CCPA (California residents), or other applicable data protection laws.
7. Data Retention
We retain your data for as long as your account is active or as needed to provide you services. If you delete your account, we will delete your personal data within a reasonable timeframe, except where we are legally required to retain certain data.
8. Children's Privacy
The App is not directed at children under 13 (or higher age where required by applicable law). We do not knowingly collect personal information from children. If you believe we have collected such information from a child, please contact us and we will take steps to delete it promptly.
9. International Data Transfers
Your information may be processed in the United States or other countries where our service providers operate. By using the App, you consent to such transfer and processing in accordance with this policy. We take appropriate safeguards to ensure your data is protected in accordance with applicable laws.
10. Changes to This Policy
We may update this Privacy Policy from time to time. We will post the revised policy with an updated "Last updated" date. Continued use of the App after changes constitutes acceptance of the updated policy. For material changes, we may provide additional notice (e.g., in-app notification or email) where required by law.
